The Thames - ride and fly
This was going to be a Rainham Marshes ride until we discovered the trains just weren't running enough on this date!
So now we'll have an alternative easy ride, from Mile End to Tower Bridge via Wapping and the ornamental canal, then across to the south. We'll then head around towards Greenwich taking in the view from Stave Hill and the city farm. At Greenwich, instead of diving under the Thames, we'll carry on to North Greenwich and take the Cable Car back to the north bank. Depending on the time and people's inclinations, we may visit The Crystal Exhibition centre (free and has a cafe too). From there it's an easy run back to Limehouse/Mile End. Drop out point at Greenwich by taking the foot tunnel back to Island Gardens (but then you miss the flying!).
We'll find a cafe lunch stop along the way (still checking out the best places) or bring your own food if you prefer. Bring an Oyster PAYG card if you have it for the cable car (cost is £3.20 with Oyster, otherwise £4.30)
We're trying a new meeting point - the Half Moon pub on Mile End Road (near Stepney Green tube station/Co-op). Join us at 09.30 if you want coffee/breakfast before setting off, otherwise be there by 10.00 to depart. You can bring your bike into the courtyard area and we can lock them together as required.
Total distance a fairly slow 15-ish miles, with a lot of motor traffic free paths, some quiet roads and just a few busier ones (but you can walk any nasty junctions if you prefer).
Please note - this ride is entirely suitable for small wheeled folding bikes - for those of you with a choice of bike, bringing a folder would be good as it will make our cable car crossing quicker for the group!
Upcoming rides & events
Our rides are highlighted by "RIDE". You don't have to be a member to join in and we're also always looking for new ride ideas. Contact our Rides Co-ordinator for further information.
There is no need to register beforehand for a ride unless this is specifically stated, most rides are "turn up and go".
Please note that for train assisted rides we often cannot publish times until about 2 weeks beforehand because of the need to check engineering works. Also sometimes our ride leaders do have to change dates/times/routes at reasonably short notice. Generally this website will be up to date and also details will be sent out to our email groups, but if in doubt contact the ride leader or our rides co-ordinator to check arrangements.
