Brighton Ride

Saturday, 4 June 2011 - 8:30am - 7:00pm

This year's edition of the Wheelers' London to Brighton ride. This is a slightly different route to last year, starting with a gentle route over the North Downs, and lunch at Lingfield (choice of eating places). Then on to Ditchling Beacon and down to Brighton. Time for a cup of tea, an ice-cream and a swim before returning to London by train. Single ticket is £10 or £5 with Groupsave via Thameslink services.

Two meeting points - 08.15 at Cutty Sark Gardens for a 08.30 departure or 09.45 at Orpington station for a 10.00 departure. The ride out from Cutty Sark will be via fairly main roads. Trains to Orpington are every 15 mins from London Bridge and you can use Oyster PAYG. Please contact the leader (Alex) in advance if you want to meet there.

Updated info: There should be three food/drink stops but no cash machines! So bring cash, and also feel free to bring a picnic if you prefer, plus snacks and drinks just in case. The weather forecast is good for swimming.

Ride report:

Brighton the Slightly Longer Way

Normally we go to Croydon and head due south, but this time ride leader Alex decided to give us a slightly eastern experience, which cut out a few big hills (but introduced a few others...)

Chilling out at Clacket Lane. As a cycling group, we don't often get to visit a motorway service station. We were pleasantly surprised by this one.

Amazingly, it got 20 miles before the canvas wore through. Good to see that someone's doing their bit to minimise waste of the planet's resources...

And then it was Ditchling...

The road ahead looks quiet, but Bob's been here before and he knows whats coming Liz overtakes a couple of cars as she leads the pack up Richard looking good on his new Boardman

Caroline glides up effortlessly Wondering "why did I ever think this was a good idea?"...but they were nearly at the top! Stylish as ever on her single speed - but did Nichola make it all the way? Of course she did!

And then we got there - some well-earned beer on the beach...

Report Dave, route Alex

Rides information

Our rides are highlighted by "RIDE". You don't have to be a member to join in and we're also always looking for new ride ideas. Contact our Rides Co-ordinator for further information.

There is no need to register beforehand for a ride unless this is specifically stated, most rides are "turn up and go".

If you haven't ridden with us before please read our Ride Guidance Notes.

Please note that for train assisted rides we often cannot publish times until about 2 weeks beforehand because of the need to check engineering works. Also sometimes our ride leaders do have to change dates/times/routes at reasonably short notice. Generally this website will be up to date and also details will be sent out to our email groups, but if in doubt contact the ride leader or our rides co-ordinator to check arrangements.
