Two Rivers and a Deer Park

Saturday, 10 March 2012 - 9:30am - 5:00pm

We will head westwards via Limehouse and Wapping then along the Thames as far as Richmond, where we will climb up the park to admire the views. Then we'll descend to join our second river of the day and follow the Wandle trail to West Croydon, returning to the East End on the London Overground (Oyster PAYG). Expect an easy pace, lots of traffic free riding (it will be possible if you prefer to walk across Tower Bridge and we will avoid busy roads) and some cafe stops.

The total distance is around 30 miles,  but if you want a shorter ride then you can return by train from Richmond via the District Line or main line train. We won't necessarily escort you all the way to the station but can give you directions and maybe a map. Mostly flat apart from Richmond Park, suitable for all bikes.

Ride report:

This was a pleasant meander to Richmond and then on to West Croydon via Wimbledon Common and the river Wandle. From the usual Green Bridge start (with a another sizeable crowd of 25) leader Rob took us west along CS3 (Cable St) then across Tower Bridge and through the back streets of Borough, past the market and through the narrow streets along the riverside . We followed Upper Ground to Westminster, then crossed the river a couple of times following NCN4 to get to Battersea park. Following the obligatory tea stop (top croissants in Battersea Park cafe), we continued South of the Thames to Putney, then along the riverside path to Barnes. From there, we turned inland by the London Wetlands Centre (well worth a visit, but no time today) and cycled to Richmond Park. Lots of roadie cyclists here, who shot past us as we headed to the cafe, which seemed a more sensible use of the facilities.

After a leisurely lunch sitting outside the park cafe, we headed towards Wimbledon, crossed the common then joined the Wandle trail (where the slower group mysteriously appeared in front of the the faster – the Strava map below may help explain this bit of time-travel). This is the first time I've tried the Wandle route, and like the Waterlink Way (south from Lewisham, which Wheelers often use), it's a peaceful way to work through London, with lots of views of the river, and some ingenious cut-throughs. Not a quick route for commuting, but great for a weekend potter. Eventually, we arrived at West Croydon, for the train home (and a quick visit to the Greggs outside, last chance for a VAT-free pastie!).

The group then headed in various directions – with the Isle of Dogs/Stepney contingent de-training at Shadwell, with a quick pint in mind. After some deliberation over venue, we ended up in the Star of the East, which is quite a unique East End pub, where a couple of pints were supped. I think the only pub I've ever been to with a BYO crisps policy, but good to see at least four bikes parked inside.

Another excellent Wheelers ride – thanks to Rob for planning and leading (and being dedicated enough to do a test-run of the whole thing), and Rides Co-ordinator Caroline, who suggested the Wandle trail dimension, which I recommend.

Dave

Rides information

Our rides are highlighted by "RIDE". You don't have to be a member to join in and we're also always looking for new ride ideas. Contact our Rides Co-ordinator for further information.

There is no need to register beforehand for a ride unless this is specifically stated, most rides are "turn up and go".

If you haven't ridden with us before please read our Ride Guidance Notes.

Please note that for train assisted rides we often cannot publish times until about 2 weeks beforehand because of the need to check engineering works. Also sometimes our ride leaders do have to change dates/times/routes at reasonably short notice. Generally this website will be up to date and also details will be sent out to our email groups, but if in doubt contact the ride leader or our rides co-ordinator to check arrangements.
