Parks of North London - edition 4

Saturday, 2 November 2013 - 9:45am - 3:30pm

Another chance to enjoy our cycle tour of the parks of North (East) London, some large, some small, several with cafes. We have done this ride three times before and will follow approximately the same route but hopefully with something new thrown in (could be the Olympic Park depending on time and fine tuning of the route)

The ride will be about two-thirds on road, with off road sections up the Parkland Way from Finsbury Park to Highgate, along the Lee valley and through some of the parks. We will find quiet roads wherever possible, so it will be an easy sociable ride and should be OK for relative beginners especially as you will be riding in a group and we'll be happy to walk across any particularly tricky junctions. Suitable for most bikes - but note that the Parkland Way can be muddy.

We'll make at least 2 cafe stops, maybe 3, depending on weather, time and the general inclinations of the participants. For those wanting to bring their own food, please feel free to do so but note that you might be eating out in the rain if the weather is unkind to us!

We will leave from outside Vesuvio Cafe at 09.45. The ride leaders will no doubt be there from about 09.15 having coffee so feel free to join us. We will also pick up from London Fields at around 10.15 - Lamb Lane entrance. You might have to wait a few minutes for us depending on how promptly we get away! We should be back in the Mile End/Limehouse area by about 15.30.

Ride report:

Another great ride from Caroline.

Most of us met at Vesuvio’s for coffee and a chat. A new ride starting point (but not a new café as it’s a Wheelers’ favourite and our regular haunt, especially right after our monthly free repair workshop).

Through Ropemakers’ Field via the canal from Limehouse, we skirted Mile End and Victoria Parks, to the ride’s Hackney meeting point in London Fields. Via Hackney Downs to Clissold Park, where we admired parts of the New River, a ‘modern’ aqueduct bringing water from Ware in Hertfordshire to Sadler’s Wells. The New River being 400 years old, modern is relative to Roman aqueducts.

A short distance to Finsbury Park for another café stop and from there onto the Parkland Walk, a walking and cycling path to Highgate along what was an old railway line. Then a short distance on road to the Parkland Walk continuation, which boasts one of the greatest views of London. Not many know of it, so it has a certain intimacy and privacy the big hill viewpoints don’t (e.g: Ally Pally, Parliament, Primrose, Crystal Palace etc.)

To Muswell Hill Park, which merges with Alexandra Palace grounds, to Priory Park where there is what was a huge fountain of 50 tons of Cornish granite, originally in St Paul’s Cathedral churchyard, and now full of plants.

After Downhills Park, with its Gaelic football pitch, we rode on to the Lee Valley Park to the next café stop in Markfield Park, sited on former sludge tanks of a sewage treatment works. The handsome building nearby containing a restored beam engine.

Along the river Lea and up the hill to Springfield Park and, after riding along the Lea for twenty minutes in the rain, we arrived at the Olympic Park where the sun was shining off the wet ground. We stopped at the Timber Lodge for a while, then continued to Victoria Park and Mile End Park.

Such a good route, with one third off the roads, it meant we could easily chat and be sociable, which is a large part of what the Wheelers are about.

Rides information

Our rides are highlighted by "RIDE". You don't have to be a member to join in and we're also always looking for new ride ideas. Contact our Rides Co-ordinator for further information.

There is no need to register beforehand for a ride unless this is specifically stated, most rides are "turn up and go".

If you haven't ridden with us before please read our Ride Guidance Notes.

Please note that for train assisted rides we often cannot publish times until about 2 weeks beforehand because of the need to check engineering works. Also sometimes our ride leaders do have to change dates/times/routes at reasonably short notice. Generally this website will be up to date and also details will be sent out to our email groups, but if in doubt contact the ride leader or our rides co-ordinator to check arrangements.
