Ride - Australia Bound

Sunday, 4 October 2026 - 10:30am - 5:00pm

Yes, this is the ride many of you have been looking forward to, Australia and back in a day. But as talented as I am, not even I can "break the laws of physics", however I can bend them a little. Botany Bay was the landing site of Captain James Cook in 1770 and became Australia's first settlement. The first convict settlement was supposed to be established here in 1788 but was deemed unsuitable and moved five miles north to what is now Sydney.

So, we can't cycle to Australia in day but we can cycle to the next best thing, the hamlet of Botany Bay just west of Enfield. An easy paced, moderate distance of 13 miles on quiet roads with some moderate hills and a heart pumping one mile 50 mph uphill single lane road, but there's a pavement. Return by train from Enfield Town to Hackney Downs or Bethnal Green.

Date: Sunday 4 October
Time: 10.30am
Meet: Pavilion Cafe, Victoria Park (///answer.often.home)

We'll visit the Robin Hood pub in the hamlet for Sunday lunch (you can bring your own) and then the Botany Bay Farm Shop where you can purchase organic fruit and veg and locally sourced dairy produce. meats and honey so bring a bag. Bring a lock and means of buying a train ticket. Both the pub and the shop accept cards.

Prisoner fancy dress desirable but optional. Reply with a 'Yes' if you would like to join this ride.

Singing too-ral-li, oo-ral-li-ay,
Singing too-ral-li, oo-ral-li addity,
We're bound for Botany Bay"

Rides information

Our rides are highlighted by "RIDE". You don't have to be a member to join in and we're also always looking for new ride ideas. Contact our Rides Co-ordinator for further information.

There is no need to register beforehand for a ride unless this is specifically stated, most rides are "turn up and go".

If you haven't ridden with us before please read our Ride Guidance Notes.

Please note that for train assisted rides we often cannot publish times until about 2 weeks beforehand because of the need to check engineering works. Also sometimes our ride leaders do have to change dates/times/routes at reasonably short notice. Generally this website will be up to date and also details will be sent out to our email groups, but if in doubt contact the ride leader or our rides co-ordinator to check arrangements.
