Cycle Tour to Thamesmead

Sunday, 14 September 2025 - 10:30am - 5:30pm

Come and join Tower Hamlets Wheelers on this history cycle tour of Thamesmead. I said I'd never do it again but public demand and the promise of beer has resulted in a change of heart.

For those of you who don't know Thamesmead is an area of social housing built by the Greater London Council at the end of the 1960s, on the edge of south east London with its brutalist architecture of streets in the sky and called the town of the 21st century.

Date: Sunday 14 September
Time: 10.30am
Meet: Under the Green Bridge, Mile End Road in front of Costa Coffee

The ride will be mostly off road and away from traffic but there will be some road riding. We will be looking at the architecture of Thamesmead, its social impact, its future and my long association with the area. Additionally we'll visit the top of the world and check out an old ruin, (I'm not referring to your ride leader).

It's not a hard ride, about 25 miles in total but there will be plenty of stopping so, why not stretch yourself. Inflate your tyres to their correct pressure and bring a spare inner tube. Thamesmead is a bit of a cultural dessert on a Sunday so please bring drinks and some snack food, there are cafes and shops en route and we'll stop where necessary. Also pack your phone, money, shades and waterproofs. We will be returning via Silvertown and Becton Park and the ride is expected to end at 5pm at the Printing House Pub, Stratford High Street.

If for whatever reason you need to return there are train services and the Elizabeth Line from Abbey Wood or the DLR from Woolwich Arsenal so bring your Oyster card. The most iconic parts of Thamesmead have been demolished or are in the process of being demolished so don't miss your chance to see this (recent) historic area.

If the weather is looking dodgy then I may cancel with the consensus of the group. For more information email or call me.

All I Need Is Your Cash - I've never charged a fee in my 25 years of leading rides but from now and until the end of the year I will be asking for donations at the end of each ride. Donations are not mandatory but if you feel that the ride was of value to you, then if you can make a donation that would be welcomed. The Zacchaeus Project, a senior citizens' activity club in Bethnal Green is raising money to buy an e-bike for their members who are beginning to have mobility difficulties and an e-bike will help them maintain their weekly activity. Don't think of it as a donation but crowdfunding!

Rides information

Our rides are highlighted by "RIDE". You don't have to be a member to join in and we're also always looking for new ride ideas. Contact our Rides Co-ordinator for further information.

There is no need to register beforehand for a ride unless this is specifically stated, most rides are "turn up and go".

If you haven't ridden with us before please read our Ride Guidance Notes.

Please note that for train assisted rides we often cannot publish times until about 2 weeks beforehand because of the need to check engineering works. Also sometimes our ride leaders do have to change dates/times/routes at reasonably short notice. Generally this website will be up to date and also details will be sent out to our email groups, but if in doubt contact the ride leader or our rides co-ordinator to check arrangements.
