History Tour Ride to Thamesmead
A special midsummer holiday ride to Thamesmead, an area of social housing on the edge of London with its brutalist architecture and called the town of the 21st century with its streets in the sky.
The ride will be mostly off road and away from traffic but there will be some road riding. We will be looking at the architecture of Thamesmead, its social impact, its future and my long association with the area. On the way there and back we will ride a helter skelter, look at an old ruin (no, I'm not talking about your ride leader), The Beatles and not forgetting my pastimes rape, ultra-violence and Beethoven, (this is a a cryptic reference to an iconic movie).
It's not a hard ride, about 25 miles in total but there will be plenty of stopping so, why not stretch yourself. Inflate your tyres to their correct pressure and bring a spare inner tube. Thamesmead is a bit of a cultural dessert on a Sunday so please bring drinks and some snack food, there are cafes and shops en route and we'll stop where necessary. Also pack your phone, camera, money, shades and waterproofs. We will be returning via the Thames southern path and the ride is expected to end at 5pm.
If for whatever reason you need to return early there are train services from Abbey Wood or the DLR from Woolwich Arsenal so bring your Oyster card. The most iconic parts of Thamesmead have been demolished or are in the process of being demolished so this will be the very last time I do this history tour so don't miss out.
The ride is free but you must book so please click the link below.

Rides information
Our rides are highlighted by "RIDE". You don't have to be a member to join in and we're also always looking for new ride ideas. Contact our Rides Co-ordinator for further information.
There is no need to register beforehand for a ride unless this is specifically stated, most rides are "turn up and go".
If you haven't ridden with us before please read our Ride Guidance Notes.
Please note that for train assisted rides we often cannot publish times until about 2 weeks beforehand because of the need to check engineering works. Also sometimes our ride leaders do have to change dates/times/routes at reasonably short notice. Generally this website will be up to date and also details will be sent out to our email groups, but if in doubt contact the ride leader or our rides co-ordinator to check arrangements.
