Marauding To Thamesmead
The cancelled Bike Week ride to Thamesmead has now been rescheduled for Sunday 9th July.
To celebrate Bike Week another special ride from Wheelers to Thamesmead, an area of social housing on the edge of south east London with its brutalist architecture and called the town of the 21st century with its streets in the sky.
The ride will be mostly off road and away from traffic but there will be some road riding. We will be looking at the architecture of Thamesmead, its social impact, its future and my long association with the area. On the way there and back we will be discussing sugar lumps, ride a helter skelter, look at an old ruin (no, I'm not talking about your ride leader), met police scuba diving dogs and not forgetting my personal favourite rape, ultra-violence and Beethoven.
As an added bonus for the cancellation we’ll also be cruising the river with The Beatles, telling the tragic story of Queen Victoria’s third daughter’s namesake and finding a hidden operational railway.
The ride will be about 25 miles in total but there will be plenty of stopping. There is one section where you'll have to carry your bikes up and down some steps. Inflate your tyres to their correct pressure and bring a spare inner tube.
Because it's a Sunday Thamesmead is a bit of a cultural desert so please bring drinks and some snack food, there are cafes and shops en route and we'll stop where necessary. A lunch stop at a retail park has now been factored in. Also pack your phone, camera, money, shades and waterproofs. We will be returning via the Thames southern path and the ride is expected to end at 5pm.
If for whatever reason you need to return early there are train services from Abbey Wood or the DLR from Woolwich Arsenal so bring your Oyster card.
Meet UNDER the Green Bridge in front of Costa Coffee at 10am for a ride that you're not likely to forget. I would like to leave promptly at 10am, a coffee stop is planned within 15 minutes of the start. If the weather is looking dodgy then I may cancel with the consensus of the group. For more information email or call me.

Rides information
Our rides are highlighted by "RIDE". You don't have to be a member to join in and we're also always looking for new ride ideas. Contact our Rides Co-ordinator for further information.
There is no need to register beforehand for a ride unless this is specifically stated, most rides are "turn up and go".
If you haven't ridden with us before please read our Ride Guidance Notes.
Please note that for train assisted rides we often cannot publish times until about 2 weeks beforehand because of the need to check engineering works. Also sometimes our ride leaders do have to change dates/times/routes at reasonably short notice. Generally this website will be up to date and also details will be sent out to our email groups, but if in doubt contact the ride leader or our rides co-ordinator to check arrangements.
