12 September 2018
Tower Hamlets Wheelers
Monthly Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, 12th September 2018 19:30
Held at The Cabin, St. Margarets House, Old Ford Road.
Present: Christy, Keith, David T, Julie, Terry, Richard, Michael Barratt, Alison (Sustrans Bike-It), Helen, Madeleine.
Apologies: Owen, Alex.
1. Maintaining Cycling access during Roadworks
Michael Barratt gave a presentation on his work on maintaining cycleways whilst road works are being undertaken. There is current work on-going on CS2 over the border in Newham and planned work coming up for CS3. Michael is currently working with the CS3 contractors to preserve the cycleway
Actions – To scout out the CS3 works when they are underway and tweet support if a good job has been done of maintaining cycle access.
2. Ropemakers Field
Terry attended a Limehouse forum meeting on the aggressive speed humps put in on the Ropemakers Field bridge. Private developers had put in speed humps and a dividing pole. These are now to be removed, but not clear from the meeting if the dividing pole is to be removed as well. Will be a further Limehouse forum meeting which Terry will attend but needs someone else to attend as well as atmosphere can be quite anti-cycling.
Action – Terry and Madeleine to attend meeting if able, awaiting date and time.
3. Cable Street Issues
Issue with peak hours cyclist behaviour.
Action - Terry and Owen to attend meeting
4. Isle of Dogs to Hackney Cycle Route
Julie provided an update on the TfL route. Julie and Alex attended a meeting with the borough and TfL. Route outlined, but still yet to be fully finalised.
5. Meghan Update
Meghan to hopefully attend nexts months meeting, unable to attend this month as clashed with another groups meeting.
6. Alison – Bike It
Alison from Sustrans programme Bike It gave a brief presentation on what she does within the borough and how she would like us to work together to pressure council into improving conditions for walking and cycling in the borough. Alison works with a number of schools within the Poplar area of the borough. Interested in all active travel not just cycling. Needs help with implementing school streets closures like that of Camden and Hackney. Has a few schools that are actually asking to be a part of this. Some of her pupils have been asked to do a street audit and present what they want to the council. Would be good to link in with this.
Action – Alison to contact us with a date as to when the pupils are giving the council presentation.
7. Rides and Events
Keith took a group of urban planners from Sweden around Tower Hamlets (and a bit beyond). They were at a conference here and had a morning free in which they wanted to see a bit of the infrastructure of London. Overall the experience was a positive one for them, taking in some of the good and not so good bits of Tower Hamlets cycling infrastructure.
This coming Saturday (15th) there will be a ride around Tower Hamlets as part of the Speed Histories series taking in local landmarks involved with the suffragette movement. All interested parties need to register on eventbright for a ticket.
Workshop on Saturday 30th September should be well staffed but the following one on Saturday 20th October will need extra volunteers as Keith is potentially away.
Aberfeldy ride scheduled for Saturday 29th September at 10am. Again need people to be available.
Couple of events coming up, which will require volunteers to help:
Saturday 6th October – Boundry Estate Fun Palace
Saturday 27th October – St Margaret’s House Event
8. AOB
David had an AOB for the group that we should be thinking about a decision regarding where if asked our place for a liveable neighbourhood would be.
Action – everyone to get thinking about where it could be and how it would look like.
