Tower Hamlets Wheelers AGM April 2011
TOWER HAMLETS WHEELERS Annual General Meeting Minutes Wednesday, 13 April 2011 7.30pm Held at St Margaret's House, 21 Old Ford Road. PRESENT: Rob (Co-ordinator), Owen (Secretary), Dave A (Treasurer), David T (Chair) Caroline (Rides), Keith (Events), Gerry (Special Projects), Aneeta, Richard, Ian, Leigh, Alex, Michelle, Bob, Chris, Lakhdar (THCC), Sam (LBTH), Tom (LCC) APOLOGIES: Nick, Terry, Janice CHAIR: David T MINUTES: Owen 1. INTRODUCTIONS Everyone introduced themselves including our guests Lakhdar from Tower Hamlets Cycling Club, Sam from LB Tower Hamlets and Tom from London Cycling Campaign. 2. LBTH UPDATE Sam Margolis, Travel Awareness Officer, LB Tower Hamlets gave an update. Healthy Borough Programme: Walking and Cycling projects has now finished with funding completed. Many of the programmes that have been a success are continuing including Adult Cycle Training. 1000 adults through project in 2 years. 43% are cycling more after 3 months of training. Final report for HBP will be produced in the next couple of months. Cycle Superhighways complimentary measures funding: Cycle parking facilities have been implemented throughout many estates in the vicinity of CS3 (Cable St etc.). Going forward, more CS project funding from CS2 Aldgate-Bow, roll out of cycle hire. Volunteer Rangers project: Requests have all been logged and some have now been completed. There is a priority list which is being worked on. - Dave A recommends we have quarterly meetings for VR project to keep the impetous going. Sam agrees and that will be happening. - Keith asks about size of projects we could expect to get accepted. Sam reiterates the project is aimed at "small measures - big impact". - Ian asks about the influence LBTH/Wheelers have on the TfL roads. Sam says TfL have complete control over their trunk routes. Gerry raises issue about parking in housing developments. Sam new developments have parking controls, so many parking spaces/residents. Exisiting sites using funding such as CS measures to increase cycle parking. Gerry raises LBTH Cycle Connections document - would be good to have a year review. Sam agrees, doesn't want it to be just a document sitting on a shelf. Would support having a review. 3. TOWER HAMLETS CYCLING CLUB Lakhdar Djelloul gives an overview of THCC. The club does regular rides on Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays aimed at families, over 50s and women. Begineer rides in Mile End and Victoria Park, more advanced along canals and CS. Advertises through GPs, community groups, mosques, basically gets out talking to people. The club started with family and neighbours. Bikes can be provided for first 6 weeks then participants expected to buy their own. Cycle storage still an issue. Maintenance courses run. Works with Skyride as well. Leigh asks about ways for THW and THCC to work together - cycle storage issues, bike maintenance, longer rides. Sam says about how HBP has helped fund small community groups. Sam has one of his colleagues working to look at pulling cycling groups of the borough together to share resources. Chris suggest writing to the Mayor to endorse the cycling groups of the borough. 4. MINUTES OF LAST AGM Approved. 5. ACCOUNTS Treasurer Dave A presented the 2010/11 accounts which were unanimiously approved. 6. YEAR REVIEW Wheelers Rides Report April 2010 to March 2011 2010-11 was a successful year for Wheelers' rides. We held 37 rides with a total of 565 participants. Our usual variety of long and short, in town and out in the country attracted a mix of regulars and "ad hoc" cyclists. Advertising some on the London wide rides e-group and on the LCC central website resulted in a few people from North, South and West London coming along to join the Eastenders. Generally our gender balance was good, the notable exception being a ride to Cambridge which ended up being me and 10 men. Our weekend away was again a sell out with a waiting list, and 27 of us admired the Kent scenery and a fabulous dinner masterminded by Aneeta (THW chief cook and knitter). Just outside the LCC reporting year (and so not included in the above figures) was our April 2nd ride with the Frank Haines Memorial Trust. Our first venture into organising a charity ride resulted in 57 cyclists enjoying the Essex countryside on a choice of two routes. THW riders were free to ride without getting any sponsorship, but we expect that between them the sponsored riders will have raised something like £10,000 all for youth projects in Tower Hamlets. Looking forward, we have started working with Hackney Cyclists who are not running a programme of social rides. We have also got some new ride leaders coming forward so we should be able to offer another varied programme for 2011-12. Caroline Fenton 13/04/11 Charity ride organised and held on 2 April. 57 riders took part. Looking forward to working more with Hackney Cyclists to liasing on dates and combined rides. Nick sends thanks for rides. ----- Workshop Keith gives a brief overview of workshop. Still well attended. David T adds always good to remember how it's useful for introducing people to our other activities. NB From this month onwards workshop now on 3rd Saturday of the month. ----- Events Report 2010/11 Wheelers attended five shows last year and we organised our Cyclist Breakfast as part of Bike Week. We attended the Park Life Spring Fair in Mile End Park, TH Cemetery Park Festival, Arnold Circus Centenary Picnic, St Barnabas Community Fair and Spitalfields Green Fair. At these events we had a Dr Bike and plenty of information regarding cycling in the East End. Our involvement in the Arnold Circus Centenary Picnic was bigger than in previous years. We held a Dr Bike session for the children of the Boundary Estate on the Saturday and the next day organised the 100 revolutions of the Circus which was a big success. My thanks go out to all those who volunteered and all the hard work they put in to make the event the success it was it certainly enhanced our reputation in that part of the East End. Last year we also purchased a new events gazebo which is very attractive and draws people to our stand. I'd like to thank everyone who volunteered their time at our events last year and hopefully we'll do more this year. Keith Jones Events Co-ordinator Chris mentions LBTH are always talking about Boundary Estate but cycling never mentioned. He'd be glad to here about such activities such as Arnold Circus so they could be raised. ----- Campaigning/Special Projects - Gerry reports on projects/consultations involved in - Cycle Superhighways CS3 (Tower Hill-Barking) and CS2 (Aldgate-Bow) including complimentary measures: permeability projects - Bicycle User Groups being used to get feedback outside of THW. - LIP consultation. - Westferry/Canary Riverside: Michelle let's all know she's been working on pushing for access to be reopened. - Olympics: Steve reports about continuing meetings with LCC working group. Richard comments about the new Dunbar Wharf signage to the riverside. Gerry proposes we carry out a survey of all that area Narrow Street and Westferry. Thanks to all. ----- Newsletter Rob happy to produce but needs an editor to get the content together. 6.
